How to Grill or BBQ a Turkey

Though a traditional American Thanksgiving dinner consists of a roasted turkey, many families are increasing opting for BBQ or grilled turkey. This is one form of turkey that will take the load off you, but it also works well in a small kitchen. Using wood to grill the turkey only enhances it taste.

Ingredients:

  • 1 turkey (about 15 pounds)
  • Olive oil
  • Coarse salt (to taste)
  • Grounded pepper (to taste)
  • Stuffing (optional)

Equipments

  • 1 Gas or charcoal rotisserie grill

Instructions:

  1. To prepare barbequed or grilled turkey, remove the plastic wrapping from the meat. Free the bird’s legs from its tucked position. Also, remove the giblets from the meat.
  2. Wash the turkey well and pat dry.
  3. Stuff the cavities of the turkey, if you want, and then close them with the help of strings. You may truss the bird a little, so as to create an even smaller size.
  4. Place the turkey on a tray, and rub it all over with olive oil. Season the bird with the coarse salt and pepper.
  5. Now, on a rotisserie grill, push the rotisserie shaft between the legs of the turkey. Place the shaft on the rotisserie ring. You should be able to rotate the rotisserie. Cover the grill and switch it on.
  6. In case of a stuffed turkey, you can grill one pound of turkey for about 13 minutes, while in the case of an unstuffed turkey, 11 minutes should be enough to cook a pound of turkey.
  7. With the help of a meat thermometer, keep checking the temperature of the turkey. As per United States Department of Agriculture norms, a cooked turkey’s thigh temperature should read 180 degrees centigrade, and the temperature inside its breast should read 165 degrees. When these temperatures have been attained, your grilled or barbequed turkey shall be ready to serve.
