How to Make Beer Can Chicken

From the name itself, it is understood that beer and chicken are the two most important ingredients for preparing this recipe. Many also call this as beer butt chicken. When some extra flavoring is required, we can include spices and herbs. Selection of beer is also an issue of choice. Many use wine instead of beer, but then it simply refutes the name of the recipe. Whatever you choose, the ultimate goal of cuisine is to quench the appetite. Preparation time is 10 minutes, whereas cooking takes 1 hours and 30 minutes.

Nowadays, many are using a canned chicken broth instead of wine, beer or any other alcohol. This is a simple 3-steps formula recipe. Grabbing the chicken and beer can from the market, seasonings and an oven. This type of cooking method involves placing a can of beer up into the cavity of the bird and then roasting it. The beer inside the can starts boiling up, forcing the flavor and aroma up through the meat of the bird. Various other drinks & fruit juices can also be tried in the same fashion. A can should be able to hold the bird and stand properly. Or else, the beer can spill, spoiling the cooking. It’s advised to make this outside the rooms, as it causes lot of smokes, due to the liquid present inside the cavity.

Ingredients:

  • Whole chicken: 1 (4 lbs)
  • Black pepper: 1 tsp.
  • Dry spice rubs: 3 tbsps.
  • Beer: 1 can
  • Vegetable oil: 2 tbsps.
  • Salt: 2 tbsps.

Instructions:

  1. Removing the skins, giblets and neck, clean the chicken inside and out. Pat it dry.
  2. Rub it gently with oil and then after, with salt, spices or dry rub and pepper. The rubbing should be done evenly, from inside and on the outer surface. Set it aside.
  3. Take a half-full beer-can. Grab the chicken by its legs and place it gently over the beer can. Make the chicken sit inside the grill in the middle of the grate. Balance the bird on its 2 legs with the support on the back of the grill.
  4. Cook the chicken over moderate to high heat leaving the grill cover on for nearly 75 minutes until the juices running out of it are clear. You can check the doneness of the meat with a knife cutting across the thigh area. Once done, remove it from grill and allow resting for 10 minutes before carving it into your desired bites.

Tips:

  • The size of the beer-can should get well-fitted inside the chicken.
  • The oven, microwave or grill, whatever be the source of cooking, should be large enough to accommodate the sitting chicken.
