How to Make Honey Chicken

As the name suggests, this dish is a combination of chicken and honey tasting sweet and sour. The double taste gives the recipe an unparalleled and unique savor. Appearance wise, it’s very tempting and difficult to resist. This recipe is very popular among the Chinese people. It can be coupled with chapattis, bread, soup with loads of salad or just as a munching snack, i.e. it’s one in all dish. You can serve it with green coriander/mint chutney or chili sauce. If you are looking for a change and spice up your evening with a wonderful snack, then it’s a right choice. Other variations of this dish are butter honey chicken, lemon and honey chicken, honey chicken breasts and fried bananas and honey nut chicken. The difference between butter honey and only honey chicken is the melting of butter and honey together. The rest of the preparation procedure remains the same. Anyhow, orange makes an important constituent of this recipe. If you don’t have a microwave, you can simply prepare the dish in a conventional oven. But the cooking and preparation time will vary accordingly. As an ingredient, red chili powder can be added depending upon individual taste.

Ingredients:

  • Chicken pieces: 1 pound
  • Vegetable oil: 2 tbsps.
  • Honey: 3 tbps.
  • Bell pepper: 1
  • Ginger: 1 tsp.
  • Garlic: 1/2 tsp.
  • Carrot: 2
  • Onion: 1
  • Chestnuts: 1 ounce, drained
  • Rice: 3 cups
  • Salt: as desired
  • Black pepper: as desired
  • Water: 1 cup
  • Soy sauce: 3 tbps.
  • Red wine vinegar: 3 tbps.
  • Gravy mix: 1 ounce

Instructions:

  1. Clean and rinse the chicken thoroughly patting it dry.
  2. Cut it into few thin and long strip sections
  3. Stir fry the chicken pieces in a frying pan or deep pan over moderate heat.
  4. Heat oil in a large skillet or wok over medium-high heat.
  5. Once done, drain the excess grease and keep aside.
  6. Take a large mixing bowl and combine garlic-ginger (paste/powder, as available), pepper, vinegar, gravy mix, water, honey and salt and mix thoroughly to a smooth consistency.
  7. Now gently pour the content of the bowl onto the fried chicken over the pan. Stir it until it becomes thick.
  8. Cover the pan and cook for 10 minutes.
  9. Lower the flame and add carrots and simmer for 8-10 minutes. Add other chopped vegetables one by one, including the water chestnuts.
  10. Simmer it for another 10 minutes.
  11. Once the vegetable pieces are of your desired softness, remove it off the stove and serve hot with hot rice.

Tip:

  • If you are going to serve the dish as a snack, the chicken chunks should be smaller bite-size. So that, they can be picked with toothpicks.
  • You can marinate the chicken beforehand to bake it well.
  • For an easy dish of honey chicken, you can simply melt honey and butter, both in same quantity. Peel 1 seedless orange. Pour the honey-butter mixture over the chicken pieces and place the orange peels all over. Cook it for 45 to 50 minutes. You can add seasoning as desired.
