How to Make Potica Bread

Potica bread came from humble beginnings in Slovenia. It has a unique, sweet and nutty taste, which makes it pretty addicting.

Ingredients:

  • 1 ½ tsp of active dry yeast
  • ¼ c of white sugar
  • ¼ c of warm milk
  • 6 egg yolks
  • 1 1/3 c of milk
  • 1 c of butter (softened)
  • 1 c of butter (melted)
  • 1 c of honey
  • 1 ½ c of raisins
  • 1 ½ c of chopped walnuts
  • 1 tbsp of ground cinnamon
  • 5 c of all purpose flour

Instructions:

  1. Place the yeast, warm milk, sugar and 3 tbsp of flour together in a mixing bowl. Mix well and leave for ten minutes or until the mixture looks creamy.
  2. Take a larger bowl and cream butter with sugar. Add the yolks one at a time, beating after each addition. Add 4 cups of flour, milk, salt and the yeast mixture. Add in remaining flour at half a cup a time, stirring after each addition.
  3. Place your dough in a floured area and knead for 10 minutes until the dough is smooth.
  4. Place the dough into a large and slightly greased bowl. Coat the dough with oil and cover in a damp towel. Leave it in a warm place and wait for the dough to rise.
  5. Deflate the dough and place it in a floured area. Split the dough into two equal pieces. Roll them out until they become around half an inch thick. Spread the dough pieces with melted butter, raisins, cinnamon, honey and nuts. Roll them so they’ll look like a jelly roll and place on the baking sheets.
  6. Preheat oven to 350 degreas F. Bake your bread for an hour or until it turns golden brown.

Serve hot.
