How to Make Red Velvet Cake

Perfect for the holidays, the red velvet cake’s white exterior hides the red surprise beneath the frosting.


For the cake

  • 2 1/2 Cup sifted cake flour
  • 1 tsp. baking powder
  • 1 tsp. salt
  • 2 tbsp. cocoa powder (unsweetened)
  • 2 ounces red food color
  • ½ Cup unsalted butter
  • 1 1/2 C sugar
  • 2 eggsup
  • 1 tsp. vanilla extract
  • 1 Cup buttermilk
  • 1 tsp. vinegar
  • 1 tsp. baking soda

For the frosting

  • 16 ounce cream cheese
  • 1/2 Cup of butter
  • 1 tsp. vanilla extract
  • 2 1/2 Cup of powdered sugar
  • Salt (pinch)


  1. Preheat the oven to 350 degrees. Put the butter and sprinkle flour to two 9-in rounded cake pans.
  2. Sift together the flour, salt and baking powder into a container. Set it aside. In a medium sized bowl, combine the food color as well as the cocoa powder and set it aside.
  3. Beat the sugar and butter together in a bowl or use a hand mixer for about three minutes. Beat the eggs one by one. Add the vanilla flavor and the red cocoa while you scrape the bowl with the spatula
  4. Put 1/3 of the mixture of flour to your butter
    mixture and beat the ingredients well. Add in the buttermilk. Beat in the 3rd part of the flour mixture as well as the 2nd half of the buttermilk. Lastly, incorporate the remaining flour mixture.
  5. In a bowl, combine your vinegar and baking soda. Put the combined vinegar and baking soda to the cake batter and mix. Put in the pan and bake it for 25-30 mins.
  6. Allow the cake to cool and put on the frosting.
