How to Make Sweet and Sour Chicken

As the name goes by, the dish is sweet and sour. Though the name sounds like a Chinese recipe, it’s commonly use mostly among Westerners and Americans. This is a very delicious and simple-to-make recipe. The tastes make it a favorite among the kids. The sweet is very tempting, whereas the pineapple is a little tangy. It’s healthy and nutritious also. Almost all the ingredients for this recipe are available in the comfort of your kitchen. If any of the items you miss, replace it with something of your own taste. Readily available, sweet and sour sauces in the markets simplify your job to a great extent. The dish can be prepared with pork, beef and other poultry as well. Some useful tips can make the whole preparation procedure a cake-walk task. Noodles, rice or chapatti can accompany this dish quite well. The comfortable fact about making this dish is that you can use any portion of the chicken meat, wings, breast or drumsticks also. If depends upon your own choice and preference.

Though there are several ways to make a delectable dish of sweet and sour chicken, here we are going to discuss on the simplest one:

Ingredients:

  • Green bell pepper: 2
  • Cornstarch: 1/4 cup
  • Water: 1 3/4 cup
  • White vinegar: 1/2 cup
  • Pineapple: 1
  • Orange food color: 2 drops
  • Flour: 1 1/4 cup
  • Vegetable oil or butter: 2 tbsps.
  • Salt: 1/2 tsp.
  • White pepper: 1/4 tsp.
  • Egg: 1
  • Chicken: 8 pieces

Instructions:

  1. Clean and rinse the chicken neatly and cut into cubes.
  2. Wash the green bell pepper and cut into small pieces.
  3. Cut the pineapple into chunks and drain the juices. Reserve the juice for later.
  4. Combine the stored pineapple-juice, water, sugar, orange food coloring and vinegar in a sauce pan and bring to a boil. Turn off the stove. Add the starch and water. Stir both slowly until thickened. (You can add water and starch beforehand to avoid the formation of lumps).
  5. Add the rest of the ingredients and stir to blend the content of the saucepan thoroughly. In the end, add the chicken pieces, coat them well.
  6. Heat cooking oil in a skillet or deep frying pan and fry the chicken pieces until golden brown.
  7. Once done, remove the pieces onto a paper towel to drain extra fat.
  8. When the pieces are ready to serve, put them together on a serving dish with chopped green bell peppers and pineapple bits. Top the dish with a generous pouring of hot and sour sauce.

Tips:

  • You can simply avoid adding vegetables to it. The use of pineapple and sweet-sour sauce are enough to get a perfect taste.
  • Instead of green bell pepper, you can add yellow, red, or orange pepper.
  • Bean sprouts and blanched almonds can be used as healthy ingredients.
  • Sesame oil can also be used instead of butter or vegetable oil.
