You shouldn’t go wrong with this recipe for whole wheat bread. It’s healthy, nutritious, and very easy to make!
Ingredients:
- 2 tablespoons white sugar
- 1 tablespoon active dry yeast
- 3/4 cup warm water
- 1/4 cup milk
- 1 tablespoon vegetable oil
- 1 cup whole wheat flour
- 2 cups all-purpose flour
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1 egg, beaten
Instructions:
- Using a small bowl, dissolve the sugar and the yeast in warm water. Let the mixture stand until it becomes creamy. This will take about 10 minutes.
- Using a large bowl, combine the sugar and yeast mixture with the milk, vegetable oil, whole wheat flour, 1 cup all purpose flour and salt. Mix until well beaten. Add the rest of the all purpose flour, ½ cup at a time, while mixing well after you add each half.
- When your dough has pulled together, put it out on to a lightly floured surface. Knead the dough until it becomes smooth and elastic. This will take about 10 minutes.
- Using a large bowl, oil the inside of the bowl and place the dough in and turn to coat it with oil. Cover the bowl in a damp cloth and allow the dough to rise in warm place until the volume doubles. This will take about 1 hour.
- Take two 8×4 inch bread pans and grease them. Deflate the dough and turn it out on a lightly floured surface. Part the dough in two equal pieces and form them into two loaves. Put the loaves in the pans. Cover with a damp cloth and allow it to rise until its volume doubles. This will take about 40 minutes.
- Preheat your oven to 400 degrees F.
- Brush a lightly beaten egg to the risen loaves.
- Bake at 400 degrees F for 30 minutes.
